Seminar ‘Urban rehabilitation and revitalization’ (08-07-2008)
From 19 to 21 October 2008 the international seminar ‘Urban rehabilitation and revitalization’ will take place in Oran, Algeria. The seminar is organised by the Col•legi d’Aparelladors i Arquitectes Tècnics de Barcelona, l’Agence Espagnole de Coopération Internationale pour le développement (AECI) and the Office National de Gestion et d’Exploitation des biens Culturels Protégés. The seminar will discuss themes of rehabilitation on an international level as well as on Algerian level and more specifically within the Sidi El Houari area in Oran.

Transnational Exchange in African Architectures and Urbanisms

2009, a session is organised, called “Transnational Exchange in African

The office of Lippsmeier + Partner Architekten in Nairobi Kenya,
is looking for a junior architect to support one of their projects. The
project consists of renovation, expansion and building of primary
schools in the slums of Nairobi and is financed by the German government
in the context of financial cooperation between Kenya and Germany. The
tasks of the junior architect consist of supporting the project leader
in office- drawing- and supervising activities. Cooperation with the
project implementation team of the Ministry of Development and several
help organisations will also be part of the assignment.

Cape Town in South Africa is looking for three research officers.
Candidates should have (or be near to completion) a PhD or substantial

Warwick Triangle: Integrating the Informal Economy into Urban Plans(20-03-2008)
On Thursday 27 March at 6.30pm, the South African architect Richard
Dobson will present his work on Warwick Junction in Durban, South Africa
at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. A
reception and display of photographer Dennis Gilbert's work on Warwick

Round table radio discussions

During the event African Perspectives two round-table discussions on
African architecture were organized by Bureau Afrique (Radio Netherlands).
The English discussion was held with Ola Uduku, Nuru Inyangete and
Antoni Folkers. Abdelmoumen Benabdeljalil, Antoni Folkers and Lassana
Cissé participated in the French version. Both discussions were led by
Helene Michaud and can be listened to

International Seminar:
‘Urbanisation in Africa: permanence and ruptures’ (21-02-2008)
From 2 to 5 July 2008, the Ecole Africaine des Métiers de l'Architecture
et de l'Urbanisme (EAMAU) organizes the seminar : ‘Urbanisation in
Africa : permanence and ruptures’, in Lomé, Togo. The deadline for
submitting abstracts for the seminar, which is open to all interested,
is 30 March.

Two short films (21-02-2008)
During the weekend of 8 and 9 September 2007, Robert van Kats, Veerle
Denissen and Ramon Boers went to London for the project The African
House, to visit the Ghana@50 Housing Exhibition. Godson Egbo and Giles
Omezi of the Bukka foundation, gave Robert and his crew a look into the
British Ghanaian Diaspora and showed them not only the Exhibition but
took them to many other interesting locations as well, like the Elephant
& Castle Shopping Centre, Pennarth Street, and the Jesus House. The crew
taped more then five hours of film and was able to make two short films
out of their material:
Ghana@50 and
Transformation of Space.

iStrike and doual’art
presentation (04-02-2008)
Since 2005 iStrike and doual'art work together on SUD 2007, a long-term
programme of cultural activities aimed at transforming the city of
Douala (Cameroon) into a case study, to facilitate and multiply new site
specific productions and to document, reinforce, consolidate and give
international visibility to the cultural and innovative projects
produced and based in Douala and in Cameroon. A presentation of both
organisations and description of SUD 2007 can now be found in the
