With one-third of the global urban population living in slum-like conditions, mostly in self-built and self-organized informal settlements, the provision of proper housing, infrastructure, and public services has become a major challenge for municipalities. Urbaninform believes the growth of the informal city is a legitimate bottom-up response, stating that planners and officials today, instead of evicting the dwellers, aim at integrating the informal settlements into the city.
Acting as a support in developing new forms of global and local collaboration, urbaninform wants to associate the immense know-how developed bottom-up with professionals and experts on a global level.
"We believe in future-oriented technology, practical know-how, and participation". urbaninform supports local actors by transfers of knowledge, and connects them to a network of experts and entrepreneurs. "We support the development of new forms of global and local collaboration. urbaninform`s goal is to develop into a lively community".
Redefining Good Urban Governance and Reappopriating Public Space are discussion platforms organised by the urbaninform where city officials, developers and community organizations can come together to discuss strategies for the re-organization of informal settlements and the impact of local stakeholders on open space management.
