Despite the massive economical impact of Diaspora groups within host countries - as well as in home countries, immigrants have remained invisible for a long period. This is now changing and the influence of immigrant groups is, on both sides, often experienced as disturbing.
It is time to start looking for the hidden opportunities and positive impulses that can be found within the Diaspora for host and home grounds.
The African House wants to explore these opportunities for the built environment. On the 30th of October a DVD and booklet will be presented, containing an initial inventory.
After an introduction by Ola Uduku (Nigeria/ UK), Célia Tchengang (Amsterdam / Paris) will moderate a debate with, among others, Hein de Haan (Amsterdam), Giles Omezi (Nigeria / UK) and Alexander Vollebregt (TU Delft) as participants. We are pleased to invite you to attend this event.
About the presenters:
Ola Uduku is Senior Lecturer at the School of Architecture of the Edinburgh College of Arts. Her research interest lies among others in minority groups and their sense of identity and space use. She conducted extensive research on these issues in the UK.
Célia Tchengang trained at the London Metropolitan University, has built up extensive experience as social policy advisor in the banlieus of Paris. She is now living and working in the Netherlands.
Already in the eighties Toni Kofi came to the Netherlands, and is since then involved in many projects concerning intercultural relationship. He has advised and trained in the fields of healthcare, education, politics, business and culture. He started STAND together with a group of Dutch students and other African representatives.
Hein de Haan, previously a tutor at the Delft University of Technology, is an architect operating in Amsterdam and has a long history in designing and developing social housing projects, also for communities and immigrant groups.
Giles Omezi is a young architect operating in London, from Nigerian background. Together with his partner Godson Egbo he founded Bukka trust, a NGO with the aim to set up projects with architecture and planning professionals and students in Nigeria, where their roots lie.
Alex Vollebregt is urbanism tutor at the Delft University of Technology, has lived in many African countries and is specialised in cross cultural and interdisciplinary projects based on grass roots approach.
The DVD presentation and the debate are the result of a collaboration between STAND and ArchiAfrika starting in 2006. In the previous years, several activities took place, among which workshops, films and discussions, touching upon the influence of the Ghanaian Diaspora in Ghana and the Netherlands. The debate will broaden the discussion to a more general discussion on the position of the Diaspora, the hidden opportunities and the positive impulses.
