Near the city centre, the Central Library was built serving the city of Dar es Salaam. Because it was the first library of Tanzania, it is also the National Library for the whole country, housing all printed items on legal deposit. It is also the administrative headquarters for the national wide public and school library services.
Significant alterations are the vertical extension of two stories in 1998, some partitions for classes and offices, an extra lift (at the entrance of the rental offices) and paints on the outside columns and beams.
